Privacy Policy
- Who Administers the HillSearch website and controls its privacy policy?
This HillSearch site is the website of The James J. Hill Reference Library's HillSearch Membership program. The Library is located at 80 West 4th Street, Saint Paul, Minnesota USA 55102. The Library's public website is www.jjhill.org. We can be reached via email at customerservice@jjhill.org. Or by telephone at 651-265-5500. This policy is effective at September 1, 2009 and supercedes any previous policy statements. - Whom does this privacy policy cover?
This policy covers anyone who uses this site. Whether or not you are a member of the Hill Library, if you use this site, you have accepted the terms of this privacy statement. - What does our Web server notice about you when you use HillSearch?
For each visitor to HillSearch's pages, our Web server automatically recognizes your domain name and email address because you had to log in using your email address as a username. Only authorized email addresses are admitted to HillSearch. - What information do we collect and store about you when you become a HillSearch member?
From every HillSearch member, we intend to collect and store: your correct full name, address, phone number and email address. We would like to also collect your business's name, which industry it is in, what it does for its clients, how big it is, and what your goal in joining is. Our servers automatically count how many pages of HillSearch you open. - Do we store information about your credit card?
From HillSearch members who pay with a credit card, we will collect but will not store your credit card number, immediately transferring it to TRANSFIRST's Merchant Services and then removing it from our records. - Will we provide your information to the government?
The information we collect will have to be disclosed when legally required to do so, at the request of governmental authorities conducting an investigation, to verify or enforce compliance with the policies governing our website and applicable laws, or to protect against misuse or unauthorized use of our website. - Other than those legal conditions, under which conditions will we provide your information to a third party?
The information we collect will never be shared with other organizations for marketing or commercial reasons. - HillSearch is a portal of other companies' databases. What do they learn about you?
For most of our databases, our database vendors will not see any personally identifiable information about you (not even your email address), when you launch and use their databases through HillSearch. Some vendors for example, D&B and EBSCO, do notice your IP address if you don't launch their databases using the proxy server. However, if you launch the database using the proxy server option we provide, your IP address will always be hidden from the vendor. Of course, you may have the option of entering your email address into that database's web site if you sign up for their email alerts or to store searches. But unless you give it to them, our vendor partners won't get your email address. What do we tell our vendor partners about our members? We have given our vendor partners assurance that no HillSearch members work at companies with more than 100 employees, or at companies which are governments, schools, or other libraries but we offer them no access to our database to verify this. - Communicating via our "Chat" application
The Hill Library's online "Live Chat/Talk" is third-party software we license from an outside organization. Although unlikely, it is possible for the third-party software vendor to monitor Chat sessions and therefore, the confidentiality of those questions asked during Live Chat sessions is beyond the control of the Hill Library. If you are concerned about the nature of your question and you insist on the strictest confidentiality, we recommend communicating with a Hill Business Information Specialist directly by phone or email. See "Confidentiality" below. - Confidentiality
Whether you're communicating with a Hill employee via the phone or via email, know that your correspondence is completely confidential. We may share all or parts of any question with another employee to help answer your questions, but your information and the nature of your question will not be shared with any outside parties or other patrons. - With respect to cookies,
we use cookies to indicate your past activity on our HillSearch site in order to remember to provide appropriate service when you return, to ensure that you are not repeatedly sent the same banner ads, and to customize some Web page content based on your browser type, past choices, requests, or other information that the you may send us or want us to remember about you. - If you do not want to receive email
from us in the future, please let us know by clicking on the "Unsubscribe" feature at the top of every email we send, or by calling or emailing us as listed in Paragraph 1 above and tell us that you do not want to receive email from our company. You will still receive your renewal notice, but no other notices from us. - In the past, we have arranged with other organizations
to provide registration to the organization's event at a price discounted for our members. While we will never provide them your email address, we may inform you directly of the offer we have arranged in an email from us. Before you register with them for the event, you should read their Privacy Statement. - We will never make our customer email list available
to other organizations, even reputable organizations whose products or services we think you might find interesting. You do not need to opt out from these practices because we won't do them. - You must supply us with your postal address
to become a HillSearch member. We will only send you a couple pieces of mail via the postal service each year. If we have arranged with other organization to provide our member registration to an event at a discounted price and they mail an invitation, we will deliver our addresses to a bonded third-party mailing house that uses the list to send you the invitation and then destroys it. The other organization never gets your information. If you choose to accept the invitation, before you register with them for the event, you should read the other organization's Privacy Statement. Once you register for their event, they own the information you provide them. - We ask you to supply us your phone number.
You will only receive telephone contact from us regarding HillSearch, your HillSearch membership, your satisfaction, or problems with your membership. We will never share your phone number with anyone. - Ad servers
We do not currently partner with or have special relationships with any ad server companies. Any ads on HillSearch would be for services of the Hill Library provided by our servers. Clicking on ads for Hill Library services will not capture new information about you. - Although we don't plan to,
it may someday be true that we may use customer information for new, unanticipated uses not previously disclosed in our privacy notice. If our information practices change at some time in the future, we will email you ahead of time to ask your permission and provide you an opt-out opportunity. - Upon your request we will provide
any HillSearch member a copy of the information we store on you. Email Customer Service. See Paragraph 1. - You can correct your mailing address, phone number, and other personal information at:
